The Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) Project is seeking a highly motivated and technically capable Indonesian student or recent graduate to support the development of its Do-It-Yourself Flood and Fire Early Warning System (DIY FFEWS).

Using low-cost Internet of Things technology, the system integrates environmental sensors, embedded computing devices, communication systems, and renewable energy solutions to support real-time environmental monitoring, early hazard detection, and community-based disaster preparedness.

The selected candidate will gain hands-on experience in embedded systems, sensor ntegration, prototype testing, field deployment, and interdisciplinary collaboration with University of Waterloo co-op students developing the system’s web-based application. 

Job Overview

  • Position: Prototyping and Assembling Assistant for Early Warning System Development
  • Number of positions: 1
  • Duration: Two months, from mid-August to mid-October 2026
  • Location: On-site at the FINCAPES Project office in Jakarta, with potential travel to field deployment locations. 

The selected candidate will support:

  • Assembly and integration of IoT-based flood and fire monitoring devices;
  • Installation and configuration of water-level, rainfall, smoke, flame, temperature, humidity, and soil-moisture sensors;
  • Setup of Raspberry Pi-based embedded systems and communication modules;
  • Prototype testing, calibration, and hardware troubleshooting;
  • System integration with software developers and interdisciplinary project teams; and
  • Community engagement activities and technical demonstrations, where required.

Requirements

Applicants should be senior undergraduate students, diploma students, or recent graduates in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Instrumentation, Telecommunications, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical field.

Applicants should also have:

  • A basic understanding of electronics, embedded systems, sensor integration, communication systems, and IoT concepts;
  • Familiarity with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontrollers, or similar platforms;
  • Basic familiarity with Linux;
  • Experience with wiring, soldering, electronic components, and prototyping tools;
  • The ability to read technical diagrams, wiring schematics, and component documentation;
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and documentation skills; and
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and under field conditions.
  • Experience with Git or version-control systems is considered an asset. 

Preferred Assets

Experience or familiarity with the following would be advantageous:

  • IoT projects, environmental monitoring systems, or robotics;
  • Raspberry Pi GPIO, serial communication, or sensor calibration;
  • Solar power systems, batteries, or low-power electronics;
  • Waterproof enclosures or outdoor equipment installation; and
  • Climate adaptation, disaster resilience, sustainability, or community-based technology initiatives.

Compensation and Field Support

The position includes a monthly transportation allowance. For approved field or travel assignments, the project will cover transportation, accommodation, and per diem expenses in accordance with FINCAPES policies.
